SEGUN AIYESAN

b. 1971, Benin City, Nigeria Lives and works in Toronto, Canada Segun Bamidele Aiyesan is a self-taught Nigerian painter whose work blends emotional intensity with philosophical inquiry. A graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Aiyesan began his professional career as an oil-rig engineer before fully transitioning to art in 1997. Since then, he has developed a dynamic and evolving visual language that spans acrylics, oils, watercolors, pastels, and a custom textural medium he calls “cretextura.” Aiyesan’s compositions explore themes of identity, psychology, resilience, and the human condition. Drawing on early fascinations with nature and comic books, his paintings are rich with color, layered depth, and gestural power. His work resists categorization—continually reinventing form and structure while remaining grounded in spiritual and intellectual reflection. Now based in Toronto, Aiyesan has exhibited widely in Nigeria and internationally, with shows in Johannesburg, Amsterdam, and Florence. His paintings have earned critical recognition and a growing international collector base. Through each body of work, Aiyesan continues to push the boundaries of contemporary figuration, offering viewers an experience that is both visually striking and deeply contemplative."
