The Wait II is formally the most architecturally rigorous of the Gbemileke Adekunle works in this collection. A single large figure occupies the left portion of the 150 x 127 cm composition, its mass rendered in deep tones of oil and acrylic against a luminous yellow-orange ground. The formal contrast between the figure and the ground creates a composition of considerable visual force, and the title introduces a temporal dimension: this is a painting about the experience of waiting, about the body suspended between one moment and the next. Adekunle's engagement with the psychological dimensions of everyday experience places him in a tradition of West African figurative painting that takes seriously both formal achievement and the complexity of contemporary life. The work was created in 2022 and acquired through Alexis Galleries. Its certificate of authenticity is held on file.
