Segun Aiyesan Aso Oke 2016 Acrylic on Cretextured Canvas 12.2 x 13.9 in (31 x 35.3 cm)

Curator's note

Aso Oke is a companion work to Owambe and takes its title from the hand-woven fabric that is central to Yoruba ceremonial dress. The textile itself is one of the most significant artisanal traditions of southwestern Nigeria, produced by specialist weavers in centres such as Iseyin and Ilorin and carrying complex cultural meanings related to family lineage, social status, and ceremonial occasion. Aiyesan places the aso oke fabric at the centre of a composition in which two figures are bound together by this shared textile, and the painting thus becomes as much about the cultural object as about the figures who wear it. Working at 12.2 x 13.9 inches on Cretextured canvas, Aiyesan creates an intimate composition whose small scale concentrates the textural richness of his characteristic surface. Created in 2016 and acquired through Alexis Galleries in March 2022.
