Segun Aiyesan Owambe 2016 Acrylic on Cree Textured Canvas 48.4 x 47.2 in

Curator's note

Segun Aiyesan's Owambe takes its title from the Yoruba term for a celebratory social gathering, a party or ceremony in which the performance of community, prosperity, and cultural identity is central. Aiyesan renders his subject with the full vocabulary of this social meaning: the figure is regal in bearing, the costume and headwrap signifiers of a specific cultural moment rendered with loving attention to their decorative complexity. Aiyesan works on Cretextured canvas, a surface that catches and distributes light in multiple directions simultaneously, giving the painting a jewelled quality that photographic reproduction does not fully capture. At 123 x 120 cm, the work has a substantial physical presence. Created in 2016, this is an earlier work in Aiyesan's output and reflects the formal foundations that have continued to develop across his practice. Acquired through Alexis Galleries in March 2022, the certificate of authenticity is held on file.
