Vanessa Endeley Don’t You Want To Live Before You Die? VI 2024 Archival Pigment Ink & Acrylic on Canvas 47.2 x 39.4 in
Curator's note
Vanessa Endeley's Don't You Want to Live Before You Die? VI represents a practice situated at the intersection of photography and painting. Endeley works with archival pigment ink as a base, creating a photographic ground that she then develops with acrylic marks, producing a surface that exists between and across two distinct media. This hybrid approach is consistent with a generation of African and African diaspora artists who have used the intersection of different image-making technologies as a way of questioning the authority of any single representational mode. The composition centres on a geometric tile floor rendered with a precision that contrasts with the gestural marks elsewhere on the surface, and this contrast of registers gives the work its formal tension. Endeley was born in Cameroon and has developed an internationally recognised practice that engages with questions of identity, space, and the politics of the image. The work was created in 2024, acquired through Affinity Gallery in November 2024, and the certificate of authenticity from Gallery Affinity is held on file.
