Gbemileke Adekunle Blue Serenade II 2024 Oil Pastel on Canvas 34 x 56 in

Curator's note

Blue Serenade II exemplifies Gbemileke Adekunle's handling of the reclining figure, a subject with a deep history in Western art from Giorgione and Titian through Manet and Matisse that Adekunle approaches from the specific vantage point of a contemporary Nigerian painter concerned with the representation of Black femininity on its own terms. The figure in Blue Serenade II occupies her pictorial space with complete ease and authority. Adekunle renders her in acrylic and oil pastel on canvas, working with the layered surface to create a blue and white colour field of considerable atmospheric depth. The composition reflects Adekunle's skilled use of negative space and his instinct for compositional balance. The work was created in 2022 and acquired through Alexis Galleries. Blue Serenade II belongs to Adekunle's mature figurative period and reflects the sustained formal intelligence that characterises the strongest works of this phase of his practice.
