John Oyedemi City Gate 2018 Oil on Canvas 52 x 48 in (132.1 x 121.9 cm)
Curator's note
John Oyedemi's City Gate situates itself within the tradition of West African crowd and procession painting, a genre with roots in the documentation of ceremony, commerce, and collective life that has been central to Nigerian figurative art since at least the mid-twentieth century. The 110 x 125 cm oil painting takes as its subject a monumental arch through which a crowd moves, the figures distributed in layered depth across the composition and rendered with an atmospheric looseness that gives the image both spatial complexity and emotional warmth. Oyedemi's handling of light is one of the work's principal achievements: the arch functions as a natural focal point from which illumination radiates outward, and the tonal gradations across the crowd create a sense of inhabited space rather than arranged tableau. Created in 2018 and acquired through Alexis Galleries in June 2024, the work's certificate of authenticity confirms Oyedemi's authorship and the work's provenance.
