Edosa Ogiugo Equestrian Spirit 2020 Oil on Canvas 59 x 48 in (150 x 122 cm)

Curator's note

Edosa Ogiugo's Equestrian Spirit is one of the collection's most physically commanding works. At 150 x 122 cm, the image of horse and rider at full gallop occupies the canvas with an energy that registers before the specific subject is consciously identified. Ogiugo has spoken extensively about his formative study of the European masters of light, citing Caravaggio, Rembrandt, and Vermeer as foundational influences, and the tonal discipline of Equestrian Spirit reflects this apprenticeship to the history of painting without subordinating the work to European models. The equestrian subject carries deep resonances in Nigerian and broader West African cultural history, where the horse is associated with power, nobility, and the ceremonial traditions of the Fulani and Hausa north as well as the courts of Benin and Yorubaland. Ogiugo renders this subject with both technical mastery and cultural seriousness. The work was created in 2020, acquired through Alexis Galleries in March 2022, and its certificate of authenticity is held on file.
