Where Equestrian Spirit works with kinetic energy and monumental scale, this 48 x 48 inch oil painting operates in a mode of concentrated interiority. A lone figure is depicted in a posture of absorption and reflection, the body language of contemporary solitude observed with a precision that is entirely contemporary while drawing on the long tradition of single-figure studies in Western and African academic painting. Ogiugo's chiaroscuro here is finely calibrated: the light falls on the figure in a way that reveals as much as it conceals, lending the composition a quality of psychological depth. The square format is unusual and effective, containing the figure without crowding it. Created in 2018, this is one of Ogiugo's earlier major works and reflects the foundations of a practice that has continued to develop with considerable momentum.
