Chika Idu Place Of Peace 2022 Acrylic on Canvas 59 x 47.2 in
Curator's note
Place of Peace is among the most formally accomplished of Chika Idu's portrait works. The subject, a woman in a vibrant ceremonial headwrap, is rendered in Idu's characteristic layered acrylic technique at 150 x 120 cm, a scale that gives the face a near-monumental presence and brings the viewer into a relationship of close attention with the sitter. Idu has spoken about his portraiture as a form of testimony, a means of asserting the psychological fullness and interior life of his subjects in the face of reductive or stereotypical representations of African women. Place of Peace was created in 2022 and acquired through Alexis Galleries. The title carries a quiet cultural weight: peace, in many Nigerian cultural traditions, is not the absence of conflict but an achieved state of harmony that requires sustained effort and communal investment. The Alexis Galleries certificate of authenticity confirms Idu's signature and the work's provenance.
