Reach is one of the more intimate works in the collection, and its 20 x 18 inch scale creates a register quite distinct from Idu's larger paintings. The oil on textured canvas surface has a textural roughness that gives the composition a quality of physical immediacy, as though the paint itself is reaching toward something. Idu's Nsukka training is evident in the work's formal economy: there is very little in the composition that does not need to be there, and this restraint gives the image a concentrated emotional force. The Swimmer Series and the smaller works like Reach form the connective tissue of Idu's practice, the studies and proposals that exist in productive dialogue with the major paintings. Created in 2023 and acquired through private sale in June 2025, the work demonstrates the full range of Idu's capacity as a painter working in the intimate as well as the monumental.
