Chika Idu Swimmer IX 2023 Oil on Canvas 19.7 x 15.7 in (50 x 40 cm)
Curator's note
Swimmer IX belongs to Chika Idu's ongoing Swimmer Series, a body of work that takes the human figure in water as its central subject and uses this premise to explore themes of movement, buoyancy, and the relationship between the body and its natural environment. Idu, who was born in Delta State, Nigeria, trained at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where he was shaped by a department with a distinguished history of figurative and social realist painting. The 50 x 40 cm scale of this work is intimate by Idu's standards, and the concentrated format gives the composition a focused energy. The impasto surface is worked with considerable freedom: ochre, cobalt, and white are laid on quickly and allowed to interact, creating a luminosity that evokes the optical properties of water in motion. Oil on canvas, created in 2023 and acquired through Alexis Galleries in June 2025. The Swimmer works have been exhibited widely and have established Idu as one of the most technically accomplished figurative painters of his generation in Nigeria.
